Betting in Poker by Kent
Introduction
Betting is part of the basic concept of poker, so learning to play this game you should dedicate some time to understanding the fundamentals of betting in poker. If betting was not a part of the game then it would not make any sense, winning in poker is all about taking your opponents chips (representing money) in wagers. Bets are made based on skilled decisions, poker pot odds are factors used to make the right bet. Below we will guide you through the order and proceeding of bets in poker games, for deeper knowledge on the skills needs we recommend that you read more in an educational Online Poker School.
Betting order
The rules of betting can differ little from game to game, but the on main rule of betting does not change, the turn of betting always goes clockwise around the table. So the main rule is that you bet when the turn comes to you, and not before or after.
Make your bet
In Online Poker Cash Games the betting is not to complicated, you click on the action that you want to take. This is simple and cannot be misunderstood by any of the players around the table.
In live poker games you have the choice to either make some kind of hand signal, through some chips or say how you want to play verbally. However you choose to do, you need to know how to bet and make your decision clear to the other players seated at the table.
When you want to bet
You can make this clear by speaking up, or by placing you chips in a position so that everybody can see you action. Don’t trough your chips in to the pot, this is not appreciated, it makes it hard for the other players to see the amount of the bet.
Raising
This follows the same procedures as betting, but instead of bet you announce that you want to raise. In live poker games you should be careful not confuse other players on your actions, misleading intentions can be used to feel other player’s reactions. This is not allowed in live poker games, beginners many times make the mistake to “string bet”.
Folding is not complicated at all. Eider you push your cards against the dealer so that he can muck the cards, or you announce it by speaking up.
Checking is pretty clear as well. Eider you tap you’re the table or you announce it by speaking up.
Betting action types
Opening bets
Somebody have to make the first bet, has to open the bets.
Calling
If somebody matches the bet mad before him, he calls, this means that he want to stay in the game and play his hand.
Raising
If somebody raises, he increases the bet that was made before him. Other players have to call to stay in the game.
Checking
If somebody decides to check, he doesn’t want to raise or fold.
Folding
If somebody folds, he decides to step back and not play his hand in the game. This also means the he no longer has a claim on the pot at the table.
Forced Bets (Antes and Blinds)
Poker games have forced bets to make insure that there is action. You need to make these bets to be able to participate further in the game; otherwise players could simply sit and fold until they have the perfect hand.
In poker games like Omaha and Texas Hold’em, this forced bet is a blind, which means that you make the bet before upcoming cards are dealt if you want to stay in the game.
In stud and draw games the forced bets are called antes; these are bets that are paid every single hand to participate in the game.
Forced bets, blinds and antes, can also be used in the later rounds of poker tournaments.
Limits in betting
Games in poker are divided into groups, not only by rules but also in relation to limits of betting. When it comes to betting there are three groups in community games; limit, pot limit and no limit games. The majority of stud and draw games are played in only one betting group, as limit games. Below we will guide you through how the groups are divided and the limits applied.
Limit
This is something that surely have encountered if you have been playing some poker. All poker tables have a lower and upper limit in limit games, this means that you will have to keep your bets and raise within these limits when you play at the table. In the first betting round the lower limit is applied and in the later rounds the bets will increase to the higher level of the limit game.
Pot Limit
This is pretty simple; in these games you cannot make a bigger bet then the amount of chips in the pot at the table.
No limit
This is the just what it sounds like, poker games with no limits when it comes to betting. Any player can in any betting round bet all the chips he has on the table.
One thing that you should know when it comes to playing poker, you can never lose more money then put in to the pot. Poker is a game that should be enjoyed and not abused; knowing when to stop and your personal limits is an important part of the game. As a beginner you should always start with free games or lower limit tables before you gain some experience. To begin at the higher level of tables is not a vice thing to do, since you will be meeting highly skilled Poker Players, this can take the fun out of the game. Use a strategy where you advance in your own pace, gain experience at lower levels and the slowly move up when the time is right. Las but not the least, always play at an online poker site that promote responsible gambling

The Mathematics of Poker $23.48 Thirty years ago the bond and option markets were dominated by traders who had learned their craft by experience. By the mid-1990s the old school grizzled traders had been replaced by a new breed of quantitative analysts, applying mathematics to the "art" of trading and making of it a science. A similar phenomenon is happening in poker. The grizzled "road gamblers" are being replaced by a new generation of players who have challenged many of the assumptions that underlie traditional approaches to the game. One of the most important features of this new approach is a reliance on quantitative analysis and the application of mathematics to the game. This book provides an introduction to quantitative techniques as applied to poker and to a branch of mathematics that is particularly applicable to poker, game theory, in a manner that makes seemingly difficult topics accessible to players without a strong mathematical background. |

Stud Poker $10.9 When Paul Raven’s ride at Plumpton crashes through the wing of the third last flight, it seems like one of racing’s tragic accidents. But that doesn’t explain why Paul’s closest friend, Alex Drew, appears to be involved. Or why the fall that ends Paul’s career should finally destroy Alex. Paul discovers a link between what happened at Plumpton and a sequence of other accidents apparently connected with a private poker school run by the wealthy property developer Clay Wentworth. Stud Poker seems to have little to do with the world of National Hunt racing, but by the time Paul is caught up in the dangerous game, other less honest players have stepped forward. And the stakes are high. |

Liar’s Poker $8.19 Michael Lewis was fresh out of Princeton and the London School of Economics when he landed a job at Salomon Brothers, one of Wall Street’s premier investment firms. During the next three years, Lewis rose from callow trainee to bond salesman, raking in millions for the firm and cashing in on a modern-day gold rush. Liar’s Poker is the culmination of those heady, frenzied years-a behind-the-scenes look at a unique and turbulent time in American business. From the frat-boy camaraderie of the forty-first-floor trading room to the killer instinct that made ambitious young men gamble everything on a high-stakes game of bluffing and deception, here is Michael Lewis’s knowing and hilarious insider’s account of an unprecedented era of greed, gluttony, and outrageous fortune. The time was the 1980s. The place was Wall Street. The game was called Liar’s Poker. |

Poker Face $9.99 “The intricacies of family and the complexities of the games they play mingle wonderfully here in a memoir quite unlike any other.”—George Plimpton, author of Truman Capote Katy Lederer grew up on the bucolic campus of an exclusive East Coast boarding school where her father taught English, her mother retreated into crosswords and scotch, and her much older siblings played “grown-up” games like gin rummy and chess. But Katy faced much more than the typical trials of childhood. Within the confines of the Lederer household an unlikely transformation was brewing, one that would turn this darkly intellectual and game-happy group into a family of professional gamblers. Poker Face is Katy Lederer’s perceptive account of her family’s lively history. From the long kitchen table where her mother played what seemed an endless game of solitaire, to the seedy New York bars where her brother first learned to play poker, to the glamorous Bellagio casino in Las Vegas, where her sister and brother wager hundreds of thousands of dollars a night at the tables, Lederer takes us on a tragicomic journey through a world where intelligence and deceit are used equally as currency. Not since Mary McCarthy’s Memories of a Catholic Girlhood has a writer cast such a witty and astringently analytic eye on the demands of growing up. An unflinching exploration of trust and betrayal, competition, suspicion, and unconventional familial love, Poker Face is a testament to the human spirit’s inventiveness when faced with unusually difficult odds. From the Trade Paperback edition. |
