Does anyone really make money on online Poker?

I have read ten poker books. play for hours a day. practice practice practice. learn and watch but still i have not cashed out anything big. i have been playing for 2 years now. whats my problem?

Man same here. I’ve read all the books. Taken a few lessons. Practiced for hours. Yet my golf game still sucks. Why can’t I play like the pros on TV? Why can’t I do what Tiger does?

Seriously, the legend of poker Doyle Brunson said in a recent interview on TV that there is not a day he plays poker when he doesn’t learn something. He has ten WSOP bracelets, and over 50 years experience in the game.

Daniel Negraneau, 2004 poker player of the year, has on more than one occasion lost over $500,000 in cash in one evening of poker.

Howard Lederer, one of the most respected players in the game, went broke a few years back.

Poker is not an easy game to play. Whether you are talking about live games or online games there are probably only 5% of players who will become successful and make money in the long run. Sometimes even top pros will go on a losing streak where they cannot catch a break.

The bad news is, just like any other game, you simply may not have the talent for it. You can read all the books, you can practice all you like, and you may always just suck at poker. Just like golf, pool, darts or any other game.

Poker is part math, part psychology, part intuition, part instinct, part observational, and part luck. Even two years may not be enough to fix the holes in your game. I’ve been playing three years and still have a lot to learn.

It’s hard to know what your problem is. I suggest you keep trying, read the Harrington books, and keep working on the game. If you are playing at the right stake levels, and following the right strategies, you should eventually start to improve. I’ve been impressed with the writings of Roy Rounder, you should check out his newsletter and ebook (the former is free).

For me the biggest thing that made me a successful player was learning when not to play. I recently won a pub league tournament. The field was the top 90 players in my league. We started at noon, and by four my stack was well below average. I had not caught any decent hands. But by using the right discipline I had stayed out of trouble and outlasted half the field. Eventually I was able to use my tight image to my advantage. I was not exactly playing tight, but I was catching a run of really crappy cards that made me look tight and therefore knowing this I was able to use this to my advantage. I got some good cards and used them to the max. I got some more crappy cards and bluffed with them. Before long I was a medium stack at the final table. My patience finally paid off and I started catching cards eight hours into the tournament. I was able to personally knock six people off the final table and became the massive chip leader. From there I went on to win.

Had I been impatient, or trying to emulate Gus Hansen or Daniel Negraneau I would have been eliminated much sooner. So for me the best advice I can give is learn to be selective. Be aggressive, sure. But don’t be blindly aggressive. Pick your spots and use aggression to take down the pots. Learn the difference between live play and Internet play. Accept that online your sophisticated play may simply fail because you are playing against an idiot. Sometimes straightforward is best. Good luck.
